Architectural ensemble
The project intends to resolve an urban and architectural structure, that on the one hand blends in smoothly with its surrounding, and on the other hand reflects the spirit of today's age. Considering these aspects, the materiality of the old building has been reinterpreted. Especially from a distance, the similarity of the material in conjunction with the urban planning scale seems to integrate the new within the existing ensemble of a kiosk, the WSA building and the other brick buildings. The complex geometry of the new building's silhouette contrasts with the richly-decorated, old buildings. This formulation in detail, anyway by simple means, characterizes the unique difference between 1896 and 2009.
The building is modelled after the shape of a ship – Thus, its utilization is expressed in an abstract way allowing a variety of maritim interpretations – such as waves, bug...
New building and annex to the old structure
The main entrance is located in the gap between the old building and the new construction. This space receives particular attention in the design, while the contrast between old and new as well as the panorama of the watergate and gauge tower play an important role. Further on the building can be entered by the existing access paths. There is a fully glazed facade at the entrance hall, which is made out of anti-reflective glass towards the watergate where this is necessary.
Landscape design
The existing building of the waterways and shipping office is placed in the green environment. The urban axis to the former gauge tower is emphasized by cubically clipped hedges, whereas by contrast the new, modern building is positioned on the spot. The stock of trees remains keeping as far as possible. In order to compensate the tree felling, that need to be taken, the tree population in the north of the island is extended with caution. The surfaces of the 'shared space' are made out of asphalt and coated with sand in light colour. The square areas are paved with bright-coloured concrete stones as this choice of material serves for traffic calming. On the squares wooden benches invite you to tarry.
